Gem of the Month
The Gem of the Month is a regular feature that provides an excerpt from a recent transcript that captures a snapshot of essential Elias.
This month’s Gem comes from Onix’s private session:
ONIX: “When I look at myself in the mirror sometimes and I stare at myself, I think that I’m staring at another person, it’s not me, and then I fear this image in the mirror. I’m afraid. I think this person in the mirror is making fun of me or is judging me or it’s not me, so I become afraid. Why is this? Why am I creating this experience?
ELIAS: For this is what you are creating within. You ARE judging yourself. You ARE discounting of yourself. In this, you also generate anger in relation to self, and let me express to you, my friend, anger is an expression of a lack of choices. As you express anger, what you are creating in the moment is a lack of viewing any of your choices, which you thusly associate yourself as a victim of yourself.
ONIX: So it means that I’m not doing what I really want to do, what I chose to do? I’m not working for that, so that’s why I’m blaming myself and I’m judging myself?
ELIAS: This is merely an aside, so to speak. This is objective imagery that you are generating to reflect what you are expressing inwardly. I may express to you, the core issue in this situation is how you perceive yourself and that you perceive yourself to be inadequate and of little worth, and you devalue yourself. You view yourself to be in some manners – not all, but some manners – inadequate physically in what you assess as attractive. You also reinforce this discounting of yourself in expressing to yourself that you are inadequate in learning capacity.
ONIX: How can I change that?
ELIAS: By paying attention to you and by practicing acknowledging yourself.
I may express to you first of all an exercise that may allow you to become more familiar with your expressions, for you shall not alter your expressions if you are not noticing what they are. Therefore, the exercise that I shall offer to you is that you incorporate a time framework, and each day within that time framework pay attention to ALL of your expressions, NOTICE each time that you express any words, any thoughts, any feelings that discount yourself. Note them, and allow yourself to view how frequently you engage this type of expression within each day.
Now; once you offer yourself a time framework in which you may be noticing your expressions of discounting yourself, you may begin to offer yourself a choice of a different action, and in this, you may alter the exercise, and in altering the exercise, incorporate a time framework in which each day you allow yourself to notice each time you acknowledge yourself.
Now; I may assure you initially that the first exercise shall present you with many more examples than the second exercise, but be of good cheer, my friend, for this is a tremendous opportunity. For in the second exercise, regardless of how few or infrequent you notice your expression of acknowledging of yourself, you shall present to yourself some expressions, and this is significant. For once you present to yourself even a very few acknowledgments, you may choose to continue to practice expressing those rather than continuing to express the discounting.
It is significant that you allow yourself to recognize the times in which you do acknowledge yourself, for this validates you and this offers you the opportunity to pay attention to the experience of acknowledging yourself. You are quite familiar with the experience of discounting yourself. But you are not quite familiar with the experience of validating yourself and reinforcing yourself, and as you allow yourself to notice, you offer yourself a beginning point in which to practice.
ONIX: Okay, thank you.” [session 931, October 19, 2001]

Power Users Tip of the Month - Using Elias Gems
Last month we looked at getting the most out of the Digests. This month we’re going to take a look at getting the most out of the Gems.
The Gems are “random” quotes that have links to the ordinal transcripts, so you can get the larger context. But each quote is a pithy snapshot of Elias wisdom. It is the second most used page on the website!
All perennial teachers talk about the need to balance intellect and intuition, rationality and inner knowing. Both skills develop throughout our lifetimes. Here’s a good example of learning to trust the intellect and intuitions.
I had a dream early the morning of May 1st, the day that I sent out last month’s newsletter. I was in a classroom dreamscape. Joanne was to my left, and there were 5-6 other “students” present. We were in the midst of our term projects, doing research on whatever interested us. Joanne was way ahead of me on her project, which caused me frustration because my project was still not focused. I said mentally, “what do I have to do to get over the hump and finish this course?” Well, our teacher appeared, a 40-something year old man with black hair, and he look at me and said, “Don't try too hard.” He smiled, and went into another room.
I was floored. I instantly knew what he meant, and the other students heard this too and knew. I remember looking down at his desk and thinking, “that was exactly what I needed!” And I instantly relaxed and knew how to continue and that everything would be fine.
There was another snippet, too. It was a realization that my “grade” from “teacher” was very subjective and the difference between an A- and A+ was based on his own criteria, not mine. The idea, again, was to look to myself for my own validation, not worry about pleasing teacher, do my best, and move on.
All this leads up to later that day, after sending out the May newsletter, I went to the Gems page to get my daily bit of Elias wisdom. I cleared my mind briefly, settled down mentally, and focused upon that dream imagery. I mentally asked for Elias to provide me with his own commentary on my dream. And hit the mouse button.
Now, there’s no guarantee that you’ll get a direct answer. Sometimes they seem completely from left field, but later in the day I always make the connection in some way. However, on this day, the answer seemed like a direct comment on my dream. It was a block about the difference between trusting and accepting self, the affects of duplicity, guilt, and worry. [session 510, December 04, 1999]
OK, I get the message (once again, for the millionth time!).
And this is the kind of thing that folks do all the time with the Gems. Just think of it as your own private mirror of Self. For example, Joanne did this recently and said she had a full “conversation with Elias.” (But then, Jo has been known to have “full conversations” with our living room lamp :-)
There are now over 510 quotes there that cover all the essential concepts in Elias’ teaching to date. The key is to clear your mind, settle down, and mentally state a question with full intention in the Now, and ask for a relevant answer.
How we interpret the advice, of course, is up to each of us. And like anything, we can overdo it, or be too literal. So take it with a grain of salt, be playful, and open-minded. Allow your deep intuition to come through, trust that You will provide you with the information needed.
